Services - Cosmetic Dentistry – Tooth Whitening or Bleaching

Tooth whitening and bleaching is an incredibly common procedure today that delivers spectacular results. Safe and proven, you can easily have your teeth whitened under dental supervision.

Below are a few FAQs regarding tooth whitening or bleaching. If you don’t find the answer to your question below, be sure to contact us directly.

Am I a candidate for tooth whitening?

Whitening is appropriate for about nine out of 10 patients. You are a better candidate if your teeth are darkened from age, coffee, tea or smoking as yellow, brown and orange respond better to lightening. If you have sensitive teeth, periodontal disease, or teeth with worn enamel, your may not be a good candidate. Only your dentist can determine if you are a good candidate for whitening.

What are the steps involved in whitening?

There are two methods to whiten teeth:

  1. Laser Whitening - Your teeth are whitened in one visit at the dental office using a high intensity light.
  2. Home Whitening - A custom mouthguard type appliance is fabricated for your mouth. You put the whitening agent into the appliance. One of the advantages of home whitening is you control the whitening rate.
How long can I expect the whitening to last?

Whitening lasts from one to five years, depending on your personal habits (smoking and drinking coffee and tea). You can get touchups at any point and they are generally less expensive as it may take only one or two sessions at home.

Is whitening safe?

Yes. Some patients may experience slight gum irritation or tooth sensitivity, which resolves when the treatment ends.
